PLEASED TO MEET YOU, SIR!
Thomas Oeben (1984) opened the doors of Oeben’s Mercantile in 2016 in a monumental building at Oudkerkhof in the heart of Utrecht, under the shadow of the mighty Dom-Tower. From the start Oeben’s offers a wide selection of quality goods with the best service around.
What & Why
“I could talk for hours about the ‘what’s & why’s’, but in the end Oeben’s is the store where I would like to shop. I am a huge fan of products with true history, whether it’s a rugged pair of boots or jeans, a satorial hand-made shirt or a pair of fresh sneakers. I couldn’t find a store that offered all these items under one roof, so after more then 10 years of experience in retail I decided I should start this store myself!”
“I had my wish-list for brands up and ready right from the beginning. A mix of names with a rich history such as Barbour, Baracuta, Armor Lux, Filson & Red Wing and new classics like Diadora, Bellerose & Closed. Together with some Sprezzatura from Italy like Lardini, Bolzonella & Briglia you can find everything to fill your wardrobe. I am also always out on the look for new brands with a unique story. A good place to find these brands is the PittiUomo in Florence. The trip to this fair we make twice a year isn’t exactly the worst part of my job!”
“Service makes all the difference. But what is service? Of course you are offered a fresh cup of coffee, a beer or even a glass of fine Whiskey or Brandy. You get the best and most honest advise possible and all alterations to make the fit of your purchase perfect are free. But in my opinion the most important part of service is attention. Although it doesn’t stand out, it’s the small things, sometimes with a joke or two, that make the real difference.”
“We are preachers of the ‘Quality = Sustainability’ gospel. Of course we encourage every step to a more sustainable production-proces, and try to buy local as much as possible. But quality and therefore durability always wins. And sustainability isn’t only about green, it’s about people as well. For most of the items sold at Oeben’s we can track down where it’s made, how it’s made and sometimes even by who it’s made.”
THANK YOU, SIR!
“I hope I can do this for many, many years to come. I absolutely love my job! I can still get lost and explore every fiber of the products we have in our collection. But the real reward comes with the people I work with every day: our suppliers who work so hard to make their products without compromise. The small, but experienced and enthusiastic team of guys here at Oeben’s. And most important our clients, nothing beats the feeling of a happy customer walking out the door!”
Met vriendelijke groet, | Best Regards, | Cordiali Saluti,
